Fine Arts Honors 2009-2010


Band


Straight 1's at the UIL Marching Contest
Qualified for finals at the Midlothian Marching Contest & placed 7th out of 22 Bands
The Jazz Ensemble perfomed as the Pit Orchestra for the Christmas production of "Miracle on 34th Street" at the Uptown Theater, and performed at the District Service Awards Banquet
29 of 40 participants qualified for the State Solo & Ensemble Contest held in May
The Wind Ensemble and the Symphonic Band earned Division I Plaques from the UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest
GPHS Band earned Sweepstakes, "Best in Class" 5A and Best Overall at Director's Choice Festivals in Branson Missouri.


Choir


Three students placed in the District Choir, two placed in the Region Choir and six placed in the Honor Choir for TMEA Region XX Vocal Division
Choir students earned 42 First Division (Superior) ratings at the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest
Two ensembles (20 students) and 17 solos qualified for UIL State Solo and Ensemble contest held in May
Varsity Choir ranked "Superior" in concert and "Excellent" in sight reading. Non-Varsity choir ranked "Superior" in sight reading and "Excellent" in concert
Six students earned Choir letter jackets
Choirs competed in the Soundwaves Choral Competition in New Braunfels and earned a Sweepstakes trophy and were chosen Best in Class

Mariachi Azul
Numerous perfomances in the community, including childrens hospitals, nursing facilities, private & corporate events, serenateas, Texas State Fair, Six Flags, Latino Cultural Center, Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, UNT, and the 16 de Septiembre Fiesta in Pike Park
1st Division Rankings at the Ft. Worth Mariachi extravaganza and UIL Solo & Ensemble Competitions.
Performed at Cowboy Stadium, Ft. Worth Stock Show, with Joe Ely at the Uptown Theatre, the Latino Connection Concert at the Irving Arts Center, and recorded a CD (their first)
Attended UNT Mariachi Camp, participated in two doctoral mariachi research studies (UNT & Boston U)
Attended Las Cuces International Mariachi Conference
Selected as the first-ever Metroplex Honor Mariachi winners from among 126 students in four regions
Six students earned Mariachi letter jackets


Orchestra


Ten orchestra students selected for All-Region Orchestra.
Ten members qualified to perform at the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest in May.
Varsity String Orchestra earned its 4th consecutive Sweepstakes award for Superior Concert and Sight Reading performances at the UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest.
Varsity Symphony Orchestra received a Superior Rating in Sight Reading and an Excellent Rating in Concert.
The Concert Orchestra received a Superior Rating in Concert and an Excellent Rating in Sight Reading.


CAPERS Theatre & Forensics


UIL One-Act Play advanced to the top 64 in the state
Oral Interpretation Team won 11 Sweepstakes trophies and more than 150 individual trophies
Oral Interpretation Team qualified all 15 varsity members for the state meet (1st time in school history)
Oral Interpretation Team qualified most pieces to state of all schools in Texas (most in school history)
OIT qualified 12 of 15 students to the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions
Second Place Sweepstakes, Division 3, 6th Place overall OI Team award, National Tournament of Champions
1st Place Duet Acting, National Tournament of Champions
5th Place Duet Action, National Tournament of Champions
10th Place Dramatic Interpretation, National Tournament of Champions
12th Place Dramatic Interpretation, National Tournament of Champions
OIT qualified 4 of total of 6 available spots to National Forensics League National Tournament
OIT qualified 5 of total of 6 available spots to UIL Regionals in Prose/Poetry
Debate earned 3rd place in UIL District Lincoln Douglas Debate.


Visual Arts


Visual Arts students competed in the MLK District Contest (first place and honorable mention winners) Cinco de Mayo and the Congressional Art Contest and show
100 students and artworks competed in the Reigonal Visual Arts Scholastic Event; 76 earned Superior Ranking and 22 earned Excellent Rankings
20 of the students earning Superior Rankings and gold medals at Regions advanced to the State VASE Competition
At the State VASE competition, 12 students earned Superior (Gold) Medals
At the State VASE competition, 3 students earned the state's highest award, The Gold Seal
Eight students earned finalist status at the North Texas Juried Art Competition, Young American Talent
Two students placed 2nd and 3rd overall in the Ceramics division at Young American Talent
Ten students completed 11 AP Portfolios for college credit
Two students were accepted to the Nasher Summer Institute for Teens for Summer 2010
