GPHS CAPERS OFFERING FREE PERFORMANCE OF IT’S ANNUAL CHILDREN’S SHOW

GPHS CAPERS is proud to present our annual Children’s Show. The show is normally only presented to GPISD students during the school day; however, we want our work to be more accessible to patrons this year. To the end, we will have a FREE performance on Tuesday, December 8th in Chambers Auditorium at 7:30pm. The show lasts under an hour. House will open at 7pm and there is no intermission.

PLAY DESCRIPTION: Winner of the 1998 Distinguished Play Award from the American Association of Theatre and Education, “The Yellow Boat” is fun-filled and education trip into the imagination of one very special young boy. Based on the true story of 8-year-old Benjamin Saar, born in 1979 with hemophilia, the play is a fanciful and inspirational exploration of one boy’s struggle with understanding the world around him. When a tainted blood transfusion causes Benjamin to accidentally acquire the HIV virus, his friends and neighbors no longer seem to understand him. Left alone with a box of crayons and endless creativity, he transforms his pain into a blaze of colors, shapes and magical adventures. Ultimately “The Yellow Boat” is an uplifting tale of acceptance, love and overcoming adversity. Recommended for audiences aged 8 and older, parents, families and adults, Benjamin’s story continues to touch people around the world.

We’ve chosen to perform this show during AIDS Awareness Month. The Yellow Boat utilizes the illness to illuminate much larger and more accessible social issues for your students: understanding, awareness, tolerance and empathy. The characters are not much younger than the age of your students. We hope that this experience will set the wheels in motion and will get us all thinking about the issues that are a daily battle for our kids… bullying, intolerance, hatred, loneliness.

ONCE AGAIN, IT IS FREE TO EVERYONE and only lasts an hour! The play is performed by 9th – 12th students. Please spread the word to your classes to come out and support their peers and your students. These young actors truly look forward to having you see their hard work!
